Part 2: That Isn’t Working For Me After All

By Retta Witter, Senior Consultant, J. Geiger Consulting, Inc.

It has been a week since we finished most of the pantry. In BA terms, we’re in Solution Analysis. More specifically, we’re in the Pilot or Beta Release. What I’m focusing on while in the Pilot or Beta Release is really assessing solution limitations. So in the last week since completing the pantry what I have noticed? The following are just a few of my findings (no particular order).

We don’t make mistakes, just happy little accidents.

  • I want to put up some shallower shelves on the open wall space. I’m not terribly tall (assessing enterprise limitation task in Solution Analysis), and we aren’t fully utilizing all the shelf space.

  • Amazon Prime day is great for acquiring tools to help keep the pantry organized and utilize the space better.

  • Regarding the mistake of buying Comfort Grey instead of Toasty Grey paint, I’m taking Bob Ross’ proverbial quote to heart: “We don’t make mistakes, just happy little accidents.” We LOVE the new color. Now to paint the entire hallway!

I discovered while baking muffins today that I hate getting out a step stool to grab and put away my almond flour. I now want those containers in a more accessible location and perhaps putting lesser used, small appliances in the harder-to-reach spaces should be considered. After using my mixing stand and corer/peeler attachment to make fresh applesauce in the pressure cooker (I love warm applesauce in the fall/winter months), the locations where those appliances are stored are working wonderfully.

My 17 year old son puts the dishes away. It’s one of his chores. I’m coming to the realization that if I want to find these items, I may seriously need to “5S” my pantry. My husband has an awesome label maker that I think we will be putting to good use as we get the pantry fine-tuned. Don’t know what 5S is? It’s a Lean methodology tool that stands for:

  • Sort

  • Set in Order

  • Shine

  • Standardize

  • Sustain

The list above describes how to organize a workspace for efficiency and effectiveness by identifying and storing the items used, maintaining the area and items, and sustaining the new order. It only works if you read the labels, but a mom can dream…

How do you use your skills in your everyday life? How can you use your everyday life to sharpen your BA skills?
